Lexi Shifflett-Patterson has been through this before.
But winning a Paralympic gold medal never gets old.
For the third time in eight years,
Shifflett-Patterson
and the United States sitting volleyball team are coming home from the Paralympic Summer Games with gold around their necks.
The U.S. beat China 3-1 on Saturday in Paris to capture its latest gold medal. Shifflett-Patterson, a Waseca native, was also on the gold medal-winning teams in 2020 (Tokyo) and 2016 (Rio de Janeiro).
China didn’t go away easily; the U.S. had to battle for a 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22 victory.
Red Wing’s MaKenzie Franklin was
an alternate for the U.S. team
.
Saturday’s victory gave the U.S. its third consecutive gold medal in sitting volleyball. Shifflett-Patterson is one of 11 members of this year’s team who have won Paralympic gold previously. Sitting volleyball became a Paralympic Games event in 2004; the U.S. has earned a medal in every Games since then.
The U.S. entered the Paris Games ranked third in the world after choosing not to attend the 2023 World ParaVolley Championships. This year at the World ParaVolley Super 6 tournament, the U.S. defeated No. 1-ranked Brazil and No. 2 Canada en route to the gold medal.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
