MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — Minnesota State Chancellor Scott Olson stops by MSUM to talk about the 2026-2027 funding request and how that would affect colleges and universities.
“Since then, since 2014, the state’s investments in higher education has started to move as well as modest tuition increases and frozen tuition during much of the last decade has started to move that ratio back to sixty percent state appropriation and forty percent tuition,” said William Maki, Vice Chancellor of Finance and Facilities.
For faculty and staff in the audience, the budget needs to focus on teachers and students finances, as well as the surrounding area of the University.
“We should not limit to certain groups of people who want to become teacher. We have to open it for everybody,” said Ok-Hee Lee, Dean of the College of Education and Human Services and AVP of Student Success.
“If I’m spending money. I’m going to spend some money on getting the message out the right way to the right people at the right time, so they know about our different programs,” said Don Drummond, Mathematics Faculty at MSUM.
As the meeting progressed, Olson summarized everyone’s statements to make sure he is able to get the message across.
“The kind of conversation we want to have with the legislator to make sure that we’re doing what Minnesota needs. And making sure the legislator is supporting us so we can do that,” said Scott Olson, Minnesota State Chancellor.
The meetings will continue across the state until the Legislative Session begins January 14th.
The budget request will be submitted by October 15.
The next Minnesota Legislative session begins in January.
