Arkansas Times culture editor Daniel Grear is off to one of the most incredible starts of the weekend imaginable.

He played a show with his Adventureland bandmates at White Water Tavern last night, a stripped-down, intimate set so charming that people sat on the floor just to be closer to the stage.

He followed that up by wisely taking the day off from the Arkansas Times (an incredible decision, just genius) to be the first in line at the new Pizza Hut location in the Riverdale Shopping Center. The goal: scoring free pizza for a year.

And how did Grear know about such a giveaway? Because he reads the Arkansas Times, of course.

The giveaway promised free pizza for a year to the first 25 customers in line at today’s grand opening celebration. And it’s not just measly 6-inch personal pan pies. The dedicated bunch that showed up this morning scored two complimentary specialty or 3-topping large pizzas per month. An incredible value.

“The woman handing out the cards said this is the first Pizza Hut opening in six months that anyone has showed up to,” Grear said. “Honestly, I think your article did it.”

Grear said it seemed like there were almost exactly 25 people in line. One man thought that he might get a free pizza every single day and dreamt up a business scheme where he would make about $65k a year selling individual slices.

Grear brought along a chess board and a bestie to pass the time in line. He reports that one woman was working remotely while waiting.

“Everyone was remarkably nice,” he said. “United in the cause of getting free ’za.”
