LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT/KARK) – United States Attorney General Merrick Garland visited Arkansas on Thursday to meet with state officials to discuss the progress of curbing violent crime in the state.
According to content partner KARK, Garland said the U.S. Department of Justice will award over $1 million in funding to Arkansas under the DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction Program.
He said the state also received $4 million under the National Criminal History Improvement Program earlier this week.
Garland said the U.S. Department of Justice launched a strategy to curb violent crime over three years ago, and that the number of homicides within the last year has decreased.
The attorney general noted the Department of Justice is also working with law enforcement agencies in the state to arrest violent felons, seize and trace guns, and target violent gangs.
