The University of Arkansas will have no representation in the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Championship for the rest of the week in Chaska, Minn.
Arkansas sophomore Thomas Curry, who was tied for 49th at 1-under after the opening round, shot a 6-over 78 on Tuesday on Hazeltine National Golf Club to fall well past the cut line for match play after 36 holes of stroke play.
Arkansas junior John Daly II, also playing at Hazeltine, followed up his 2-over round with another 2-over to finish at 146 and tied for 137th. That put Daly in a tie with former Razorback Segundo Oliva Pinto, who shot a 2-over 72 at the Chaska Town Course on Tuesday.
Arkansas signees Gerardo Gomez of Mexico and Erich Fortlage of Paraguay also failed to advance. Gomez carded a 75 on the Chaska course and wrapped up his appearance at 8-over.
Fortlage rebounded from Monday’s round of 80 with a 73 on the Chaska course but finished at 11-over par.
Also, Kyle Robinson of Springdale, who qualified by winning the Arkansas State Golf Association championship in June, failed to advance after finishing with a 13-over 155.
Jimmy Ellis of Atlantic Beach, Fla., posted a sizzling 9-under 61 at Chaska to finish stroke play at 10-under and claim medalist honors. Ellis will be the top seed for the round of 64, which tees off Wednesday morning at Hazeltine, where the rest of the championship will be held. Ethan Evans of Mercer Island, Wash., carded a 63 at Chaska on Tuesday and finished second.
The cutline wound up at even par, and 14 golfers wound up in a playoff for the final 11 spots in match play.
