Over the past week, the purple headlines have been flying off the shelf at PurplePTSD.
The end result, then, is a modest effort to keep readers abreast on some of the best material of the past seven days. Ideally, your Sunday morning will be enriched by getting the chance to circle back around to some what was offered on our humble site. Oh, and a shout out to the Godfather of the Purple Headlines series: Mr. Josh Frey. Enjoy the reading.
Purple Headlines of the Week: 07.28.2024
Headline #1 — Duke Shelley is Back in The Gopher State

Duke Shelley had a ton of fans — and still does — so the news of his re-signing is welcome.
True, he isn’t the world’s largest corner and nor is he going to win any strong-man competitions in the NFL, but few players possess his degree of scrappy competitiveness. One wonders if he could take the place of Andrew Booth Jr. to become Minnesota’s CB4/5.
One also thinks of the context in which he thrived in Minnesota. The Ed Donatell defense was a lot different from the Brian Flores defense (and that’s putting it mildly). Any chance Shelley isn’t quite a perfect fit? Or, perhaps, is he even better with Flores? Something to monitor.
Headline #2 — Christian Darrisaw Lands a Massive Extension

Not too long ago, PurplePTSD wondered aloud whether Christian Darrisaw is elite. The deal confirms that Minnesota thinks so. Furthermore, the contract signals an ongoing belief that he’ll continue to be elite.
Check out the word from Adam Schefter: “Vikings and OT Christian Darrisaw have agreed on a four-year deal worth up to $113 million in new money, including $77 million guaranteed. Darrisaw had two years left on his rookie contract. Deal includes $43.7 million guaranteed at signing.”
Kevin O’Connell should be a very happy man. Darrisaw, Jefferson, Addison, Hockenson: most offensive coaches can only dream of that kind of setup. Bringing it all together, of course, will be if J.J. McCarthy is the real deal.
Headline #3 — Minnesota Saw its Cap Space Shrink, But There’s Still Some Money to Spend

By officially welcoming J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner into the fold, the Vikings had to forfeit a bit of cap space. No doubt, a worthwhile trade off to get the pair of youngsters under contract.
Minnesota now moves ahead with a medium amount of cap space, the kind of financial flexibility that will allow them to be active as traders or free-agent signers (if there’s a desire in Eagan to follow that path). The other element to keep in mind is that 2025 continues to look like a time of relative financial abundance. Roll over the unused cap space?
Currently, Minnesota is burning off a lot of dead money, but that hasn’t hindered Minnesota too much. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has been doing some good work.
