Well, this one is a bit unexpected.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Vikings have decided to re-sign Dalton Risner: “Veteran guard Dalton Risner is re-signing with the Vikings on a one-year deal, per source.” Doing so ensures that Minnesota will have a shot at complete OL continuity from last season since Risner will (presumably) reclaim his spot as the LG1.
Vikings Pull a U-Turn on Dalton Risner
All of the recent momentum has been for Blake Brandel to become a starter.
Recently, offensive coordinator Wes Phillips talked about Mr. Brandel, praising him as someone who has performed admirably as a versatile depth piece. In fact, Phillips explained that Brandel “earned this opportunity” to become the LG1.
We’re a bit more than a week after Phillips shared those thoughts and the plan very likely is to slot Brandel into his backup spot once again.
Dalton Risner seems to have confirmed the deal on social media. His profile includes a clip of him racing down the field to help with a run block. There’s an all-caps skol at the top alongside some exclamation marks and some eyeball emojis.
Getting Risner back onto the field will mean Minnesota is very likely to have a starting front five that looks like this: Christian Darrisaw, Dalton Risner, Garrett Bradbury, Ed Ingram, and Brian O’Neill.
Risner, 28, is listed at 6’5″, 312. He was chosen 41st overall back in the 2019 NFL Draft. He jumped into fifteen games for Minnesota last season, starting eleven while playing 746 snaps on offense. PFF insists that he didn’t allow a single sack.
Last year, he agreed to a 1-year deal that kicked over less than $3 million. We’ll see how high the current contract goes.
The Star Tribune‘s Ben Goessling has confirmed the Risner re-signing.
