Proposed Changes to Rental Regulations in North Dakota Spark Discussion
!North Dakota Representative Jared Hendrix
BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) — Attention North Dakota renters: potential legislative reforms regarding the move-in and move-out processes may soon be on the horizon.
The Industry, Labor, and Business committee recently convened to evaluate a bill introduced by Representative Jared Hendrix from West Fargo. This initiative was inspired by a distressing personal experience shared by a constituent from Bismarck, who garnered support through the grassroots Facebook group known as ‘Legislative Action for Renters North Dakota.’
This individual reported being subjected to $5,000 in dubious fees from a major rental corporation upon vacating her apartment. Unable to settle such exorbitant charges promptly, her account was handed over to collections—a situation that severely impacted her credit score.
Aim of the Legislation
The proposed legislation seeks amendments to the North Dakota Century Code concerning landlord inspections pertinent to tenants’ leases. “If a contract dictates that someone must assume responsibility without proper consultation or communication with them,” Representative Hendrix articulated during discussions, “that creates an issue—one this bill aims to address.”
Next Steps
This proposed measure is set to be deliberated further in upcoming hearings as lawmakers consider its implications for renters across the state. Advocates are optimistic that these changes could lead toward more equitable treatment within rental agreements.
As statistics indicate increasing rates of renting households—evident as nearly one-third of North Dakotans are currently tenants—the need for robust protections against unfair practices grows ever more critical.
Stay tuned for updates on this impactful legislative proposal, which aims not only at protecting consumer rights but also at fostering fair housing practices statewide.
