In October 2024, after a staggering wait of 45 years, Darrin finally received his coveted chance at a North Dakota moose with an “any moose” license—an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime.
The year 2024 marked profound changes for the Moffett family. My wife and I were eagerly anticipating the arrival of our daughter Lily in August. Then came April 12 — the day I learned about my father’s extraordinary draw for his long-awaited moose license. The initial excitement quickly flipped into sheer panic as I realized I’d need to break this news to my wife amidst our new parenthood adventure. While this revelation wasn’t exactly thrilling to her during those early weeks of motherhood, she recognized its significance and supported us wholeheartedly—a fact for which I am immensely grateful.
Family Tradition: A History in Hunting Licenses
Reflecting on family history brings me back to 1979 when my father began applying for some of North Dakota’s most sought-after hunting licenses—elk, bighorn sheep, and moose. Fast forward to 2020: my sister Jasmine Picard from Argusville successfully secured her own cow moose tag and harvested a beautiful animal on only her third day out hunting.
Just one year later in 2021, it was our youngest brother Logan’s turn as he drew an “any bull” tag—after we had familiarized ourselves with prime areas thanks to Jasmine’s earlier success hunting there. Though he faced challenges during bow season without luck initially, Logan ultimately succeeded when rifle season kicked off; he shot an impressive bull on opening day.

As we entered the moose-hunting season of 2024 with great anticipation for more memories together as a family outdoorsman tradition continued anew through Dad’s pursuit—we decided early that we would stick with rifle hunting only—not just any rifle but rather one given by Mom during their wedding in ’91—a vintage Savage Model 110 .30-06 loaded meticulously by me after years refining handloading skills tailored specifically towards this moment!
