Sgt. 1st Class Maxwell R. Stoltenburg of Rapid City, a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard’s 216th Engineer Detachment [Firefighter Team], officially retired after 21 years of service.
During his retirement ceremony, held on Sept. 7 at the Range Road Armory, Stoltenburg was presented the Army Individual Award of Excellence in Safety for Fiscal Year 2023.
Stoltenburg received the prestigious award for his exemplary work in hazard awareness, risk management, and loss prevention. His leadership as Fire Chief while deployed to Area Support Group – Black Sea was recognized for helping to preserve readiness by preventing accidental loss of soldiers, civilians, families, and vital resources.

“We all serve for love of country, love of family, and love of each other, but as a firefighter, you’ve got an extra mission, and that’s to protect those who are protecting the country,” said Brig. Gen. David Dailey, Assistant Adjutant General for the South Dakota National Guard, during the award ceremony. “You are part of the servicemembers serving other servicemembers, and I want to say ‘Thank you’ for the support you’ve given.”

Stoltenburg enlisted in the South Dakota National Guard in June 2003 as a combat engineer with the 153rd Engineer Battalion. In 2006, he transferred to the 451st Engineer Detachment as a firefighter, later serving as Fire Chief with the 216th Engineer Detachment.
“Thank you especially to my wife for being by my side this long and while I have been gone. I’m not much without her — she’s my rock and strength — and I appreciate everything you do for me,” Stoltenburg said.
Stoltenburg’s career has been marked by his dedication to fire and life safety, his mentorship of fellow soldiers, and his commitment to excellence. He spent countless hours off duty ensuring he became a subject matter expert in all aspects of firefighting operations, while consistently supporting his teammates.
In recognition of his service, Governor Kristi Noem proclaimed Oct. 9, 2024, as Sergeant First Class Maxwell R. Stoltenburg Day in South Dakota, thanking him for his years of dedication and wishing him well in his retirement.
