New York Mayor Eric Adams has been charged with bribery, fraud and illegal financing of election campaigns, the federal prosecutor’s office in the US city said on Thursday.
According to US media reports, this is the first federal indictment against a sitting mayor in the largest US city, home to more than 8.3 million people.
The 64-year-old Democrat addressed the impending charges in statements the previous evening and described any accusations against him as “entirely false and based on lies.”
Adams said he was innocent and would fight the allegations “with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”
He had always known that he could become a target if he stood up for the citizens of New York, added the former police officer who has run the city since January 2022.
His tenure has not been particularly distinguished. The city government has been buffeted by turbulence in recent weeks, with several of Adams’ employees now under investigation for various allegations and with numerous resignations.
Adams’ popularity ratings have plummeted and calls for his resignation became ever louder, most recently even from within his own party’s ranks.
“I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City,” Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X on Wednesday before the official announcement of the charges.
“For the good of the city, he should resign.”
New York native Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, represents a district that encompasses parts of the city’s boroughs of Queens and the Bronx.
