Who is ‘The Golden Bachelorette’? See her past ABC appearances.
Joan Vassos, 61, will be ABC’s first-ever “Golden Bachelorette.” She appeared on “The Golden Bachelor” but left the show early due to a family matter.
Things got real Iowan on Episode 2 of ABC’s “The Golden Bachelorette.”
During a cornhole tournament, Jordan Heller, a senior sales executive from Chicago, revealed that he went to the University of Iowa. And during a barbeque dinner, Jonathan Rone showed off his Iowa skills while shucking the corn.
That wasn’t all, though. Both native Iowans — Rone and Dan Roemer — received group date roses, securing a spot for the next week before the rest of the contestants got a chance at the rose ceremony.
Jonathan Rone makes the first group date of ‘The Golden Bachelorette’ and receives a rose
The first group date of the season was a “senior prom.” Bachelorette Joan Vassos said that she wanted to bring the men back to a night of “firsts.”
The date included half the men, including Rone, who lives in Oakland, Iowa.
Rone recounted his high school experience, being the only student of color in a small high school. He never attended his own prom, after his date canceled on him the week before.
“I started to create a harder shell to protect myself […] I wasn’t the guy that all the girls were chasing after,” Rone said.
At 21, Rone said he went to prom, and his heart was healed.
Rone won the first rose of the night on his group date, after being crowned prom king by Vassos. The two shared a kiss after Rone received his crown, followed by a romantic king and queen dance.
“I just feel special in his arms, he’s a good man,” Vassos said. “Someone I can possibly picture a future with.”
Dan Roemer attends the second group date of Episode 2 of ‘The Golden Bachelorette’ and receives a rose
The second group date of Episode 2 included Roemer, a Des Moines native. The men performed a talent show for Vassos, with the winner receiving an opportunity for a one-on-one dinner.
With two long red ribbons, Roemer performed a dance for his act. Getting his silly side out, Roemer also showed vulnerability, mentioning that he wasn’t nervous, although his hands were shaking due to a tremor. Vassos said his vulnerability and bravery inspired her to choose him as the winner of the talent show.

Roemer shared his health journey with Vassos over dinner, saying that there was a point when he, “couldn’t get his diabetes under control.” When his organs started to fail, doctors told Roemer he only had six months left to live.
“Everything is more meaningful to me now,” Roemer said.
Vassos said Roemer did everything and a thousand times more to earn a rose. Afterward, the two shared a kiss and a romantic slow dance together.
Who did Joan Vassos choose for first one-on-one date on ‘The Golden Bachelorette’?
Charles “Chock,” Chapple, a 60-year-old insurance executive from Wichita, Kansas, was invited to the happiest place on earth for Vassos’ first one-on-one date of the season.
Chapple went on to earn a rose after a day of rides at Disneyland, meeting R2-D2 and a romantic dinner date.
