In a rare press release, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned the public that Hurricane Helene will bring “catastrophic, life-threatening inland flooding” from the storm, “even well after landfall.”
“Helene’s flooding rainfall and high winds won’t be limited to the Gulf Coast and are expected to travel hundreds of miles inland,” the release said.
The effects of Helene will be felt into the Appalachian mountains, where recent rainfall will make some areas even more susceptible to dangerous flooding.
“The major flood risk includes the urban areas around Tallahassee, metro Atlanta and western North Carolina, including Asheville,” the release said. “Extreme rainfall rates (i.e., torrential downpour) across the mountainous terrain of the southern Appalachians will likely inundate communities in its path with flash floods, landslides, and cause extensive river and stream flooding.”
The reason for the scope of Helene’s threat is the storm’s unusual size.
“Helene is an unusually large storm, whose wind field extends as far as 275 miles from its center,” the release said.
