When Alabama businessman Ric Mayers invited former President Donald Trump to attend this Saturday’s Alabama-Georgia game in Tuscaloosa, part of his job was to make sure Trump’s guests had tickets and ordering the food requested by the former president.
“I like a good steak,’’ Mayers said, “but President Trump’s (food preferences) are as mundane as it gets.”
So what is the 45th president’s “mundane” gameday meal of choice?
Trump requested two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches with cheese from McDonald’s, stadium hotdogs, Domino’s pizza and Diet Coke, Mayers said. Trump has previously requested McDonald’s while visiting Alabama, state GOP officials said.
The former president’s love of fast food is no secret.
At a CNN town hall in 2016, Trump told Anderson Cooper that his favorite McDonald’s meal was the fish sandwich.
“I’m a very clean person. I like cleanliness,” Trump told Cooper of his reason for eating fast food while traveling.
“I think you’re better off going there than someplace that you maybe have no idea where the food is coming from. It’s a certain standard. But I think the food is good.”
Trump’s love of fast food was on display when he welcomed college football teams to the White House.
When Trump hosted the Clemson Tigers at the White House in 2019 to celebrate their national championship, he told reporters he was serving the team McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King. Trump paid for the meal himself, citing the government shutdown at the time.
A few months later, when Trump welcomed the Football Championship Subdivision champions, the North Dakota State Bison, he served them Big-Macs, Chick-fil-A sandwiches.
Alabama U.S. Sens. Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville will be sitting in the box with Trump, as well as ALGOP Chairman John Wahl, other state-level Republican elected officials and friends and family of Mayers.
Mayers pitched the idea of the former president attending the game to one of Trump’s sons while at Mar-a-Lago, where Mayers is a member. At the time, Trump was holding a rally elsewhere.
“I said, ‘It will be the biggest game of the year and he’s going to walk in there to 100,000 fans screaming, ‘Trump, Trump, Trump’ or ‘Fight, Fight, Fight,’’’ Mayers recalled. “It will be amazing to have that experience.”
