ORONO, Maine (WABI) – Trey Hall is the coach who helps the Black Bears get into game day shape.
“Every guy’s going to need something a little bit different. In general terms, it’s about how to get them ready. We’ve got to prepare them for the demand of the sport. It’s a very violent, physical sport. We just have to prepare them for that demand. The better they’re prepared for that, the better they can perform on the field, and the better chance they have to stay healthy throughout the season,” said Hall, head football sports performance coach.
“He’s everything. He builds the program. He’s the foundation of this program. He got me like 10, 15 lb. Everything we do with running the ball, stopping the run, it all goes through him first,” said Shakur Smalls, senior defensive back.
Hall’s experience playing the game led to his passion for strength training.
“I’ve always been a football guy, and I’ve always been a weight room person as well. I started training at a young age and had a lot of mentors in my life who made a big difference in terms of my performance on the field. It truly came from the weight room. There’s certain days where I’ll bring a little juice and a little jack and get the boys going, but a lot of it just comes from the team themselves. They do a great job getting themselves started,” said Hall.
“He’s passionate. The players really enjoy being around him. I think they’re excited to go down there and see him every day. You need that in a weight room. The weight room is everything for us in our development,” said Jordan Stevens, head coach.
Hall talks the talk and walks the walk.
“I train at least four to five times per week. It’s hard for me to ask our guys to do something if I can’t physically do it myself. I think it goes a long way when they see you working as well. You’re grinding in there and getting after some of these hard workouts. I think it goes a long way with the guys,” said Hall.
“He still lifts every day. He does the bikes. He does Husker. He does all the hard workouts we do. Maybe not when we’re in there together, but I know he does them. He tells us the stories,” said John Costanza, senior defensive lineman.
He gets to see Maine’s work pay off on Saturdays.
“Fourth quarter when teams are tired with their hands on hips, bent over, our guys are standing strong playing to that advantage. They’ll say ‘hey, they don’t bike. They don’t hit the bikes.’ Seeing those little culture things show on the field is always a good thing,” said Hall.
Competing starts in the weight room.
The Black Bears continue their road swing through UAlbany this Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Coach Hall will have the Maine players working hard during the bye week after that.
