The best fall foliage in the nation isn’t in Wisconsin — but it’s nearby.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is the best destination for fall foliage, according to voters in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
The award was part of USA TODAY’s 10Best lists in the fall category, revealing the 10 best apple orchards, corn mazes, destinations for fall foliage, fall festivals, fall seasonal beers, Oktoberfests, places to visit in the fall and pumpkin patches in the nation.
To determine the winners, every week, USA TODAY 10Best invite a panel of industry experts to nominate their favorite points of interest and attractions across a wide range of categories. 10Best editors then vet these nominations and select a final set of nominees to be presented to the voting public for four weeks. Voting for the fall 10Best categories ran from Aug. 12 to Sept. 9.
According to The Sault News, autumn leaves in the Upper Peninsula are typically most colorful from late September through mid-October. FunintheUP.com provides a weekly UP Fall Colors Report and has many suggestions of spots to view the best fall colors.

Two Wisconsin fall festivals also made the top 10 list:
Best Fall Festival: Warrens Cranberry Festival (No. 8)
Did you know that the largest cranberry festival in the country is in central Wisconsin? The Warrens Cranberry Festival in Warrens was voted the eighth-best fall festival in USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Warrens is one of the state’s biggest cranberry producers.
The popular festival started over five decades ago, in 1973. It’s grown from 75 booths the first year to over 1,200 and now attracts nearly 150,000 visitors annually to the small town of just over 500 people. Fest-goers can take cranberry marsh walking tours, buy cranberry-themed food and products, check out a farmers market and watch the Sunday parade.
The festival also features live performances, daily religious services and multiple contests, like costume, biggest cranberry, button design, scarecrow creation and photography.
The Warrens Cranberry Festival is a nonprofit organization benefiting the Warrens community. It has helped improve area schools, the local fire department and community beautification and benefits a scholarship fund for residents.
The three-day festival is the last full weekend of September. This year, it’s Friday, Sept. 27, through Sunday, Sept. 29. Hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Find out more at cranfest.com.
Best Fall Festival: Verona Fall Fest (No. 9)
Located just outside of Madison, the Verona Fall Fest in Verona was voted the ninth-best fall festival in USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. The festival is hosted annually by the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce at Hometown USA Festival Park.
Festival attendees can enjoy fun activities — a beer tent with live music, a petting zoo, face painting, a scavenger hunt, train and hay rides, a bonfire, a magic show and more. The fest’s Food Truck Alley features everything from cheese curds to ice cream to Indonesian cuisine, and you can browse a variety of local products at the Fall Fest Marketplace.
This year’s Verona Fall Fest is Friday, Sept. 27, from 4 to 9 p.m. Learn more at veronawi.com/verona-fall-fest.
