Kirk Herbstreit is suspicious of injuries that slow down an up-tempo offense.
Herbstreit labeled such injuries “unethical as hell” and “pathetic” during Tennessee football against Oklahoma while on the call for ABC.
“This is college football,” Herbstreit said. “They look over after a big play. He looks over and just goes down. It’s not necessarily against the rules but it is unethical as hell. You see it all over against these tempo offense where guys go down with these quote-unquote injuries.”
Oklahoma defensive lineman Da’Jon Terry went down grabbing at his lower leg following a 38-yard pass from Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava to Bru McCoy, which set up Tennessee at the Oklahoma 10-yard line. Herbstreit called for a replay from the pylon cam and pointed out that Terry looked to the Sooners sideline before going down to the field and causing a delay in Tennessee’s offensive tempo.
“It’s pathetic,” Herbstreit said.
Terry, who played at Tennessee in 2021 and 2022, was attended to by Oklahoma medical personnel on the field. Terry transferred to Tennessee from Kansas. He left UT for Oklahoma prior to the 2023 season and is in his sixth season of college football.
Tennessee finished the drive with a field goal and took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Vols opened the season 3-0 before entering SEC play at Oklahoma, which is playing in its first conference game as a member of the SEC. Vols coach Josh Heupel played at OU, winning the 2000 national title as the quarterback and finishing as the Heisman runner-up. He served as a graduate assistant for Oklahoma in 2004. He returned to Norman as the quarterbacks coach from 2006-10 and co-offensive coordinator from 2011-14.
