NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma welcomed back Josh Heupel, but it was brief.
About 25 minutes before kickoff between Tennessee and Oklahoma, the Vols were finishing up their warm-ups.
That’s when an image was featured on the jumbotron with a message: “Welcome back Josh Heupel.” And a live video of Heupel on the field was placed alongside the message, which also listed his accomplishments as a former Sooner.
The public address announcer also announced Heupel’s return to Oklahoma. Oklahoma fans applauded Heupel, who is now Tennessee’s coach.
It wasn’t clear if Heupel heard or saw the message, especially because it lasted less than 10 seconds. Also, Heupel walked out of the frame of the live video shot.
Heupel led Oklahoma to the 2000 national title as a Heisman runner-up quarterback. And he served as an assistant coach for 11 seasons before Bob Stoops fired him as offensive coordinator following the 2014 season.
No. 7 Tennessee (3-0) plays No. 13 Oklahoma (3-0) in their SEC opener.
This story will be updated if there is further tribute to Heupel.
