Kentucky football offense takes step, but questions remain ahead of first SEC road test
Coverage during the game:
LEXINGTON — After back-to-back SEC games, Kentucky football dips back into its nonconference schedule today, as Mid-American Conference representative Ohio makes the trip over the state border from Athens, Ohio.
Following consecutive losses, to South Carolina and Georgia, respectively, UK can’t afford to stub its toe against a Group of 5 foe. And Mark Stoops’ team needs something in the way of positive momentum heading into next week’s game, when it hits the road for the first time this season to take on Ole Miss.
For the Wildcats to get back on the right side of the scoreboard, finding the end zone would help. Kentucky has gone eight straight quarters without scoring a touchdown.

While Demie Sumo-Karngbaye has found his footing in the backfield, the same can’t be said for starting quarterback Brock Vandagriff. UK ranks outside the top 100 in the FBS in four passing categories: passing offense (109 yards per game; 130th), yards per completion (10.22; 107th), passing efficiency (100.58; 128th) and completion percentage (.508; 127th). Kentucky is last in the conference in passing offense, passing efficiency and completion percentage while slotting in 14th in yards per completion.
Defensively, Kentucky takes on the challenge of Ohio running back Anthony Tyus III, who’s among the top 10 nationally in numerous rushing categories and ran for 203 yards and two touchdowns (on 16 carries) in Ohio’s Week 1 loss at Syracuse.
This must-win game for the Wildcats is an afternoon affair at Kroger Field.

Kentucky 41, Ohio 10: A player as talented as Tyus gives the Bobcats a fightin’ chance to beat any team they face. But the Wildcats have far more talent, top to bottom, than their MAC opponent. Vandagriff and the passing game finally start to find their form, as QB1 tosses three TD passes and runs for another to even Kentucky’s record at 2-2 four games into the 2024 campaign.
