Ohio State Football: A look at the 2014 National Championship season
In 2014, Ohio State made history by winning the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship. Led by head coach Urban Meyer, the Buckeyes finished 14-1.
Despite leaving Ohio State football to transfer to Syracuse, former Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord still roots for his old team.
McCord has led the Orange to a 2-0 start to the season while completing 69.4% of his passes for 735 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception. On Wednesday, the senior signal-caller joined Adam Schein’s “Rise and Schein” podcast with SiriusXM and discussed his decision to transfer from Ohio State.
During his appearance, McCord said he appreciated his time in Columbus and the fans he made there:

“I appreciate all of them,” McCord said of his message to Buckeyes fans. “I still root for Ohio State. I got a lot of friends who are still on the team. I still talk to a few of the coaches. I still root for them. I’m cheering those guys on. I appreciate the fans because I met a lot of great people in the community who have still been reaching out and supporting me, and that’s been awesome. On my end, there’s nothing but love for the Buckeyes.”
Kyle McCord talks decision to transfer from Ohio State
According to a report from the Columbus Dispatch in January, McCord would have been a front-runner to remain the starter at Ohio State had he stayed with the program. However, he called it a “business decision” to enter the transfer portal after coach Ryan Day would not guarantee him the starting position in 2024.
McCord entered the transfer portal on Dec. 4 before committing to Fran Brown and Syracuse on Dec. 17. As he mentioned in his interview, he said he felt he had unfinished business after leading Ohio State to a 30-24 loss to Michigan in November — the Buckeyes’ third straight defeat in “The Game.”
“I still feel like I had unfinished business after the game. After we lost, I really didn’t know that I was going to be leaving. It kind of happened pretty quickly in the span of a couple of days. The crazy thing is, literally right when I got in the portal that morning, I posted it, and a few hours later Coach Fran was sitting in my living room. So things changed pretty quickly and I guess that’s just the way of the world in college football now.”
Ohio State has since turned to Kansas State transfer Will Howard, and its offense has also been humming along early in the season. Howard has completed 35 of 54 passing attempts (64.8%) for 520 yards and four touchdowns this season. McCord completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions in his first season starting for the Buckeyes in 2023.
Last week at his news conference, Day said he was rooting for McCord’s success.
“I’m happy to see Kyle do well,” Day said. “He won some great games here and poured a lot of effort into the program.”
