VP nominee Gov. Tim Walz attends fundraiser in Newport
Vice presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s national fundraising blitz brought him to Newport on Thursday for an event hosted by Rhode Island’s Democratic Party.
DURHAM, N.H. – This may not come as much of a surprise to a Rhode Islander, but Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 20 percentage points in the Ocean State and a majority expect her to win, according to a new University of New Hampshire poll.
If the election was held today, 58% of the likely voters surveyed said they would vote for Harris, 38% Trump and 2% for Green Party candidate JilI Stein and less than 1% for a lesser known candidate.

Among the other takeaways from the “Ocean State Poll” the UNH Survey Center conducted between Sept. 12-16 of 738 “likely voters” who conducted the survey online:
Harris is seen by Rhode Island voters as performing better than Trump in the recent debate by more than two-to-one.Six in ten Trump supporters indicate they are “unlikely to display a bumper sticker or yard sign showing their support,” while four in ten Harris supporters say they too are unlikely to do so out of concern their vehicles or houses will be vandalized. (Some on both sides say they are also reluctant to discuss their preferred candidate with friends and family.)Half of Rhode Islanders believe “voter fraud” is a very serious (36%) or somewhat serious (12%) problem in the country at large. The other half disagree.A majority of Republicans believe that fraudulent use of mail ballots (88%), non-citizens voting (79%), people voting using the name of someone else (72%), ballots not being counted accurately (62%), and votes being added or subtracted fictitiously by vote counters (52%) occurs frequently in the country. Less than a quarter of Democrats believe that these things happen frequently.Only one-third (33%) of Rhode Islanders believe that voter fraud is a very (19%) or somewhat (13%) serious problem in Rhode Island. Others not so much, except among Republicans who believe it is (67%).

The poll also delved into the education levels of the supporters of the two presidential candidates and found:
Harris leads among women with a college degree (+50 percentage points) and men with a college degree (+28) and among women without a college degree (+27), according to a UNH analysis.
Trump leads among men without a college degree (+13 percentage points).
