ORONO, Maine (WABI) – Maine field hockey returns to action after a 4-3 start to host Merrimack on Alumnae Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
There have been several graduated players who have impacted the current Black Bears.
“I’ve definitely had a lot of really influential players who I’ve been really privileged and honored to be able to play with,” said Poppy Lambert, senior back.
“Hannah Abbott, our ex-captain, she was just so good at making us feel welcome,” said Kate Richardson, junior forward.
“What they’ve instilled in our program in terms of their values and the standards that we want for our program definitely come from the past,” said Josette Babineau, head coach.
The weekend continues with Stonehill on Sunday at 1 p.m. for International Day.
Maine’s success over the years has been built on a lot of international talent.
“It’s been huge to the program. It’s a really great opportunity to be able to get such diverse experiences,” said Lambert, New Zealand.
“Being able to bring in people’s experiences from all over, eventually it clicks, and you become a very unique team,” said Richardson, Scotland.
“The University of Maine is a special place because we’re such a friendly atmosphere,” said Babineau, Canada.
Maine head coach Josette Babineau enters the weekend with 199 career wins.
Players from this year’s team say it’s special to be there for her upcoming milestone.
“That’s really exciting. She’s just a phenomenal coach, and she works really hard for this program,” said Lambert.
“There’s no one who wants to win more than Coach. I’m really honored to be on the team while she’s here,” said Richardson.
“I just think of all the teams I’ve had that I’ve had the pleasure to coach for 18 years of being here. It makes me emotional because I know the work that goes into that,” said Babineau.
Maine’s homestand continues next Friday at 3 p.m. with its America East opener against Vermont.
Sunday’s International Day will also feature post-game autographs with the team.
