Key dates to remember for the Nov. 5, 2024 general election
Are you registered to vote? Today’s a good day for it, and time is running out. You’ve got less than three weeks before voter registration for the general election closes.
Since 2012, Sept, 17 has been National Voter Registration Day. President Joe Biden issued a proclamation Monday honoring it and urging all Americans to work to “secure our democracy and protect our fundamental rights and freedoms.”
“American democracy begins and ends with the ballot box — putting the right to vote and the right to decide our Nation’s future in the hands of “We the People,’” Biden said, “Voting defines our threshold of liberty and makes everything possible. On National Voter Registration Day, we recommit to protecting the sacred right to vote, and we encourage every eligible American to register to vote.”
Registering to vote is in. After global mega-pop-star Taylor Swift urged her fans to register last week, 337,826 people within 24 hours followed her link to the vote.gov website, although it is unknown how many completed their registrations.
When is the general election 2024?
The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5.

You have until Oct. 7 to register to vote in the Nov. 5 election.
The deadline to register for an upcoming election is 29 days before that election, the Florida Division of Elections said.
How do I register to vote in Palm Beach County?
ONLINE: Go to RegistertoVoteFlorida.gov to submit your voter registration application. You’ll need:
Your most current and valid Florida driver license (Florida DL) or Florida Identification (Florida ID) cardThe last four digits of your social security number
If you do not have the required information, you can still use the online system to prefill an online voter registration application form that you can print. Sign it and either mail it to your county Supervisor of Elections office or drop it off.

To register to vote, you must:
Be a citizen of the United States of America, per state and federal lawBe a legal resident of FloridaBe a legal resident of the county in which you seek to be registeredBe at least 16 years old to preregister or at least 18 years old to register and voteNot be a person who has been adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting in Florida or any other state without having the right to vote restoredNot be a person convicted of a felony without having your right to vote restored.
It’s a third-degree felony to use false information when registering to vote. Maximum penalties are $5,000 or five years in prison, according to the Florida Division of Elections.
How do I check my voter registration in Florida?
Are you already registered to vote? You might want to make sure.
Voter rolls are updated on a regular basis and if your status has changed, you haven’t voted in two general elections and you have not responded to flyers verifying your address, you might have been removed. Some states have been aggressively purging their voter rolls and eligible voters have been removed, so you should make sure.
You can verify that you’re still registered and all the information is correct by going here and entering your name and birth date. Submit the form to see your voter status, address, county, voter ID number, political party and your voter status. “Active” means you are eligible to vote.
You should do this every year well in time to address it before any voting deadlines. The deadline to register or update your register information in time for the Nov. 5 general election is Monday, Oct. 7.
When does early voting start in Palm Beach County?
By state law, early voting starts in Florida at least eight days before an election and generally ending the weekend before the election, which is Oct. 26 to Nov. 2. But many counties allow early voting several days earlier and up to Sunday, Nov. 3.

You must vote in your county but if you vote early you are not required to vote in your assigned precinct. ID is required to vote in Florida.
How to request a mail-in/absentee ballot
Any eligible Florida voter may request a vote-by-mail or absentee ballot and no reason is required. You must request a mail ballot every general election cycle, at least 12 days before the election. The deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot for the 2024 general election is 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24.
Ballots may be returned by mail or in person and all ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
