Tennessee football set the program record for points in a game in the modern era vs. Kent State on Saturday.
The Vols scored 71 with a fourth-quarter field goal to break the previous record of 70, which UT scored against Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 23, 2000. The modern era is considered to be games and records since 1937.
The record for points in a game under coach Josh Heupel was 69, which UT set in the season opener against Chattanooga. The Vols have scored more than 60 points six times in Heupel’s four seasons.
Tennessee scored a touchdown on each of its nine first-half drives.
UT kicked a field goal early in the third quarter to take a 68-0 lead. Kicker Max Gilbert kicked the record-setting field goal in the fourth at the 14:05 mark.
Tennessee also set records for points in a half with 65 and points in a quarter with 37 in the first quarter. UT’s prior record for points in a half was 52 and the record for points in a quarter 35.
