One of my biggest fears in life is being trapped in a small space aka I am claustrophobic.
My fear is not rooted in any trauma that I can remember. For some reason if I am going to be in a small space (usually to use the restroom) I need to prepare myself mentally and physically.
I always test the lock before I start using the restroom to make sure I can indeed get out. This is ridiculous in itself because a door could get stuck or a lock could malfunction at any time but for some reason it makes me feel better.
If I had it my way, I would just not lock the door. But alas, I’ve had too many people walk in on me while I’m doing my business and nobody wants to see that.
My fear would make a whole lot more sense if I dealt with a traumatic event where I was trapped in a small space for an extended period of time. This happened to an 11-year-old in Windsor, New Hampshire, over the weekend except he wasn’t trapped in a bathroom. This was much worse.
According to CBS News, the child was there exploring a rocky area at Camp Wediko, with adult supervision when he suddenly slipped between two boulders. He fell between four and five feet down and was stuck there.
The site explains that the child was wedged in such a way they he could barely move his arms or legs and the rocks themselves were too large to move. I can’t imagine the fear that this child was feeling.
Faculty members of the camp were working together to free the child and it became clear that they were going to need some help.
Hillsboro firefighters received the call just before 6 pm and they worked through the night to free the trapped child. They ended up tunneling through the side of the rocks to reach the child’s legs. It wasn’t until 3:15am that the child was lifted from the rocks with the use of “friction-reducing materials and a lubing solution”.
According to Manchester Fire, the child was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and has since been released.
Big shoutout to the local emergency teams for working together to make sure this child was brought to safety and to the staff of the Wediko school for realizing the severity of the situation and calling for the necessary help.
