ORONO, Maine (WABI) – The Maine football team fell to the Monmouth Hawks, 51-22, on Saturday to open its CAA schedule with a home loss.
The highlight of the day for the Black Bears came when Trevin Ewing returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown.
He was named CAA Special Teams Player of the Week for the effort.
Unfortunately, it put Maine on the board after the Black Bears trailed 20-0 in the first quarter.
Former Maine quarterback Derek Robertson returned to Orono with the Hawks.
He passed for 390 yards and four touchdowns, including a 94-yard strike.
Black Bears head coach Jordan Stevens said the keys moving forward are tackling better and limiting explosive plays.
“Finding a way to do that will be vitally important. We have a huge challenge in front of us with Merrimack, knowing how tough of a team they are on both sides of the ball. They fly around on both sides of the ball. We’ve got a great challenge this week, and we’re thankful for that to have another opportunity to go out and play this weekend,” said Stevens.
Maine turns to a three-game road swing next.
The Black Bears go to Merrimack and UAlbany before a bye week to prepare for Delaware on Oct. 12.
The next home game is against Villanova on Oct. 19.
