Bulldogs OG Xavier Truss on having the nation’s best running back
Bulldogs OG Xavier Truss speaks with the media on having the nation’s best running back
LEXINGTON, Kentucky — Georgia football played its first of back-to-back night games tonight, rallying back from a six-point deficit to win by one, 13-12.
The Bulldogs had a rough start with Carson Beck missing his teammates in the backfield, trailing for the first time to an opponent this season when Kentucky nailed a 55-yard field goal. The Bulldogs managed to get on the board close to halftime with a 34-yard field goal from Peyton Woodring.
From there, it was a battle of who could kick the furthest. Alex Maynor added a 32-yard field goal to regain the lead and a 40-yarder to maintain it. Woodring added a 30-yard field goal to end the third quarter.
It wasn’t until Branson Robinson found a three-yard breakaway in the fourth quarter that a touchdown was scored. He had been set up by a clean 17-yard rush from Trevor Etienne two plays before, clearing a path to finally take the lead. Maynor added a 41-yard field goal to bring the game within one, but Kentucky was unable to push itself over the hill.
Georgia football on facing former teammates at Kentucky
The storyline of former Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff and inside linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson facing their former team might’ve been more compelling than the game itself.
Kentucky had hopes that wouldn’t be the case.
Vandagriff and Dumas-Johnson each got two national championship rings during their three seasons in Athens.
Georgia players relished facing Vandagriff.
“It will be exciting to play him,” said nickel back Joenel Aguero, who recalled busted coverages he had against Vandagriff but also an interception. “I went up against him a lot last year running with the 2s.”
Georgia football coach Kirby Smart on Kentucky’s loss to South Carolina
Georgia coach Kirby Smart downplayed Kentucky’s 31-6 home loss to South Carolina last week when Vandagriff went 3-of-10 passing for 30 yards with an interception.
“A lot of things went wrong quickly for them in that game, and it snowballed in some ways,” Smart said. “I know what they’re capable of. I’ve seen them on tape. I know the football players they got. I know how physical they are. I know how they’re coached. And we’ve got to get ready for a really tough opponent.”

Georgia (3-0) wins the road opener at Kentucky, 13-12, after a fourth quarter touchdown from Branson Robinson propelled them forward. His was the only touchdown scored all night across either team. The Bulldogs have a bye on Saturday, Sept. 20, and will head to Alabama (3-0) on Saturday, Sept. 28, for a their second 7:30 p.m. game on ABC.
Alex Maynor puts the game within one with a 51-yard field goal. The score is 13-12 Georgia with 8:01 to go in the game.
Trevor Etienne set the Bulldogs up for success with a 17-yard gain up the right on the second play of the drive. It allowed Branson Robinson to score the first touchdown of the game, and for the red and black, nonetheless. The game is now 13-9 Georgia with 12:20 left on the clock.
Georgia looks to shorten the Wildcats lead with a 30-yard field goal by Peyton Woodring. Neither team has scored a touchdown with 3:52 left on the clock in the third quarter and Kentucky still leads, just now 9-6.
This is the first time this season the Bulldogs have trailed their opponent. Georgia is down 9-3 now after Alex Raynor hits another perfect field goal, going 40 yards on his third attempt. His longest attempt tonight was 55 yards. There’s 9:03 left on the clock in the third quarter.
Georgia heads into halftime down 6-3 after Kentucky sinks a 32-yard field goal in the final six seconds of the second quarter. Just before, Trevor Etienne sustained a shoulder injury. The Bulldogs already lost Tate Ratledge to a knee/ankle injury earlier in the game.
“This is the road in the SEC,” Kirby Smart said to Molly McGrath on the ESPN broadcast.
Raylen Wilson forced a fumble on a sack by Brock Vandagriff that Damon Wilson recovered at the Kentucky 23, but Georgia couldn’t get the ball into the end zone. The Bulldogs settle for a 34-yard Peyton Woodring field goal to tie the game at 3 with 3:48 to go in the first half.
The Wildcats grabbed the lead with a school-record 55-yard field goal by Alex Raynor that stayed inside the left upright. 3-0 Wildcats with 2:45 to go in the first quarter.
Things didn’t go well for Georgia’s offense on its first two possessions. The Bulldogs punted twice and mustered just 10 yards on eight plays. A third-and-long low snap from Jared Wilson was gathered by Carson Beck and he managed to get off an incomplete pass.
South Carolina defensive line transfer Xzavier McLeod was listed as a “gametime decision.” He’s dressed out and warming up as is cornerback Daniel Harris.
McLeod lined up behind Christen Miller in the position drills. Harris notably wasn’t the second-team cornerback. That was freshmen Demello Jones and Ellis Robinson IV.
Georgia brought all four of its scholarship quarterbacks with them on the 74-player travel roster for its first road game. That’s Carson Beck, Gunner Stockton, Jaden Rashada and Ryan Puglisi.
“Just a numbers game of special teams,” Smart said. “With 74, you’re not usually talking about starters. You’re talking about a travel roster of guys that are going to be emergency players and have to go in if you lose somebody. We’ve been up there before and had a couple injuries and had to fill in with guys at Kentucky. Probably the 65th to the 74th guy are special teams picks and guys that can play on special teams.”
Georgia football cornerback Daniel Harris isn’t on the final availability report for the No. 1 Bulldogs ahead of the Saturday night game against Kentucky.
That indicates Harris is not suspended for the game, but it remains to be seen if Kirby Smart chooses to play him.
Harris traveled with the team and is here at Kroger Field.
He was arrested Thursday night by Athens-Clarke County police and charged with reckless driving and four other misdemeanors. Police said radar put his speed at 106 miles per hour.
He’s dressed out and warming up on the field, wearing gloves.
Georgia is listing defensive lineman Xzavier McLeod as a gametime decision for an undisclosed injury.
Spotted a bowl rep from the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. Sometimes bowl reps come bearing something connected to the bowl, but no Cheez-Its have been distributed in the press box. Don’t think Georgia or Kentucky will land in the Orlando bowl that Tennessee played in last year.
NFL scouts from seven teams are credentialed. They are from the Texans, Giants, Buccaneers, Browns, Saints, Bills and Chargers.
Kirby Smart and son Andrew walked around the field after the team arrived to the stadium. Smart as usual was wearing what seemed to be AirPods. Andrew wore bigger headphones. They chatted as they walked. No word on any of their playlists.
Former Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff’s photo and stats have been displayed a couple of times on the Kroger Field video board already. He’s looking for a rebound game after going 3 of 10 for 30 yards with an interception in a 31-6 loss to South Carolina a week ago.
“He’s an SEC starting quarterback,” Georgia offensive lineman Xavier Truss said. “He’s got a lot of talent. He’s mobile. He can do just about anything you ask him to. He’s very coachable. I know what kind of level of player he is. He’s got a lot of talent. It’s going to be exciting to see him play again this Saturday.”
Georgia’s game captains tonight: Inside linebacker Smael Mondon, safety Malaki Starks, running back Trevor Etienne and offensive guard Tate Ratledge.
It’s an SEC crew for the conference game. The referee is Kyle Olson. He and nearly all of this officiating crew worked the Georgia-Kentucky game last season in Athens that the Bulldogs won 51-13.
