COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) — Wet and windy conditions are in store for us on Monday as South Carolina may experience its second tropical system of this hurricane season.
Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight has formed just off the South Carolina coast with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and wind gusts up to 60 mph as of Sunday night.
A potential tropical cyclone is a disturbance that is not yet a tropical cyclone but is forecast to become one and impact land within 48 hours.
This storm will be named Helene if it reaches Tropical Storm status.
It is forecast to do just that early Monday and maintain tropical storm strength.
It could make landfall between Charleston and Myrtle Beach on Monday afternoon.
The system will likely weaken to a tropical depression when it passes near the eastern Midlands Monday night, then crosses into North Carolina on Tuesday.
While this system will move much faster than Tropical Storm Debby did back in August, it still poses a threat for heavy rainfall.
As much as 3″-6″ of rain will be possible for the South Carolina Pee Dee region.
In the Midlands, heavy rain will be most likely in Kershaw, Lee, Sumter, and Clarendon Counties.
While the heavy rain may miss the northeast Midlands, most forecast models suggest 1″-3″ could fall in these locations.
Areas farther southwest will likely receive very little rainfall.
Everyone will experience windy conditions on Monday though.
Gusts up to 45 mph will be possible on Monday but should quickly calm down by Tuesday.
