Police in Pennsylvania have found the individual who was behind publishing a social media post concerning potential violence in several schools.
This individual — a 10-year-old girl — now faces charges for her actions in juvenile court.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported how the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI’s) Pittsburgh office revealed that it was investigating multiple threats made towards schools in Allegheny County last week together with police.
According to WPXI, these threats prompted many schools to close, with many officials pointing to the recent school shooting in Georgia as creating a heightened sense of apprehension regarding safety in schools.
You can listen to this story — and others important to Pennsylvania — on the original PennLive “Today in Pa.” podcast below:
Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 later reported how this viral post — which were made via Snapchat, according to a separate WPXI article — was later connected to a Shaler Area Elementary School student who confessed to police that she published the list of schools not with the intent of committing violence but as a warning as to where shootings would supposedly occur.
“Talking with one of her family members, I’m not sure if it was her father or not, that she was told that those schools were on lockdown yesterday because of the other incident,” told Shaler Township Police Chief Sean Frank to the news station. “So that’s why she chose the schools she did.”
The incident Frank mentioned involves a bullet which was found on a school bus in Shaler, which Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 states has no connection to the girl behind the social media posts.
Frank added that the girl will be charged with third-degree felony terroristic threats and third-degree misdemeanor harassment.
Added he: “To put out false narratives and not get to what the truth is, it causes us a lot of grief, causes people a lot of panic.”
