FBI investigating assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Florida
In a press conference, officials confirmed that the shooter was apprehended after attempting an assassination on Donald Trump’s golf course.
The FBI and other law enforcement agencies continue to investigate an assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday.
According to a report from USA TODAY, Secret Service agents walking the course multiple holes ahead of Trump spotted a gun barrel in bushes near the property line at around 2 p.m. When they opened fire, the suspect dropped an AK-47-style assault rifle, two backpacks and a GoPro camera and fled, authorities said.
Some Republican lawmakers, including some from Kentucky, have taken to social media to respond to the attempt, the second to occur within roughly two months. Here’s what we know so far.

Kentucky officials react to Trump assassination attempt in Florida
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell posted to X, formerly Twitter, at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, saying he’s “grateful” for former president Trump’s safety, and that there is “no place for political violence” in the U.S.
U.S. Rep. James Comer posted to X shortly after 6 p.m. saying Democrats and Republicans “must stand together united against extremism and political violence of any kind.”
Florida governor comments on Trump’s second assassination attempt
Gov. Ron DeSantis posted to X around 8:30 p.m. that the state of Florida will also investigate the incident.
“The people deserve the truth about the would be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee.”
