The Tennessee Titans started the season 0-2 with Sunday’s 24-17 loss to the New York Jets at Nissan Stadium.
Tennessee’s mistakes were a big story once again in Week 2, with quarterback Will Levis turning the ball over twice and turning the ball over on downs in the final minute. The special teams also allowed a blocked punt in the second half for the second consecutive week.
Calvin Ridley had an encouraging game with a touchdown reception and a touchdown rush, but the Titans are not playing consistently enough to win football games.
Here are three key moments from the Titans’ performance against the Jets.
GENTRY ESTES: Will Levis’ foolish decisions could cost him trust of Tennessee Titans
Situation: Titans 7, Jets 0 after lost fumble with 8:40 left in the second quarter
Levis’ penchant to make a bad play worse showed up again in the second quarter, with the Titans driving inside the Jets’ 10-yard line with a 7-0 lead. Levis tripped over a Jets defender and pitched a backward lateral toward Tyjae Spears, who could not corral the ball. Jets linebacker Quincy Williams recovered the ball, and the Titans’ chances at going up two scores early went away via another ill-advised Levis turnover.
“He knows better,” Callahan said after the game, echoing what CBS cameras caught him saying more colorfully to Levis after the turnover.
Situation: Titans 17, Jets 17 after TD with 3:22 left in third quarter
It was a nice step forward for the Calvin Ridley-Levis connection. Ridley had a rushing touchdown to go along with four catches for 77 yards and a touchdown catch to tie the game late in the third quarter on a tight through from Levis.
Ridley had to have all the concentration to see the ball in between two Jets defenders, including All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. The TD catch tied the game at 17-17 with a quarter to play.
Situation: Jets 24, Titans 17 with 17 seconds left after turnover on downs.
After Braelon Hall’s go-ahead touchdown run with 4:31 left in regulation, the Titans put together a steady drive. Levis spun out of a sack and scrambled for 13 yards to set up first-and-goal with less than a minute to play in regulation.
After a Levis rush for two yards and a Titans timeout, Levis threw high for DeAndre Hopkins on second-and-goal before being sacked on third down. On fourth-and goal, Levis’ pass to Tyler Boyd short of the goal line was batted away with 17 seconds left. The turnover on downs sealed the Titans’ 0-2 start on the season.
