It’s not uncommon to see people loitering outside convenience stores. They can often be difficult when approached by staff to not loiter, despite signs which are usually posted in very visible places.
A 7-Eleven in Manchester, New Hampshire was experiencing loiterers regularly, so they came up with what they thought was a great plan to get these loiterers to move along, but unfortunately it backfired on them a bit.
According to NBC 10 Boston, the 7-Eleven on South Main Street installed speakers that were playing opera music very loudly to get the loiterers to leave. It worked, because who wants to listen to this:
The 7-Eleven has kept the loiterrs at bay, but then they started getting complaints from people living near the 7-Eleven that it was too loud. You can’t win for losing.
Last we knew, the mayor of Manchester was looking into the situation and the Manchester Police Deparment said that noise should be reasonable levels by 10 p.m.
NBC10 Boston also spoke to the manager of the 7-Eleven who refused to comment on the situation, refering them to the 7-Eleven corporate office.
From what I can tell from NBC10’s investigation is that the 7-Eleven isn’t doing anything wrong as long as the music is at a reasonable level by 10 p.m. Sure, that sucks for people living nearby, but some sort of compromise should be made that works for both parties.
If you ask me, a better way to deter the loiters is to put Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” on loop. Do that and they’ll never come back!
