‘Made for Nashville’: Tennessee Titans unveil new Nissan Stadium look
The Titans shared another glimpse of its new stadium.
The budget for Nashville’s new NFL stadium under construction has grown by $100 million as design plans continue to be finalized.
The initial $2.1 billion Nissan Stadium budget is now $2.2 billion, with the additional $100 million in costs paid for by the Tennessee Titans.
The Metro Nashville Sports Authority’s board of directors unanimously approved the plan changes on Thursday morning after reviewing the evolving designs provided by the Titans for the 60,000-seat stadium.
New plans include adding more space for growth and increasing the technologies to make the entire facility capable of doing “frictionless” point-of-sale transactions so that fans can, for example, order and pay for food online rather than waiting in a line at the concourse.
Intuit Dome for the LA Clippers is the first fully “frictionless” stadium to be constructed. The Titans’ changes are being made to keep up with the fast-changing sports marketplace and to ensure the longevity of the building, team officials said.
Also, increased space will be reserved for as-yet unknown future uses.
“We will build additional space and then leave it as shell space,” said stadium project executive Kellen DeCoursey. “We don’t know what we will need in the future but we have room to grow.”
This new NFL stadium is funded in a long-term partnership between the Titans, the state of Tennessee and Metro Nashville. Metro officials are contributing a $760 million loan and the state put in $500 million to be repaid with future stadium-related revenues. Those loans, known as revenue bonds, are fixed and cannot be increased, Metro and team officials said.
The Titans initially agreed to finance $840 million, a figure that has now grown to $940 million.
“The point is that this board signed up in August 2023 for a $760 million commitment, period,” said Jeff Oldham, Metro’s bond counsel. “End of story.”
What is the status of the new Nashville NFL stadium?
It has been five months since stadium construction kicked off and construction crews have started to form the columns of the new stadium. Within the next week, another construction crew will be building the underground garage.
In the first five months of construction, the northwest concrete super structure has been formed, with the other three beginning to take shape in the next five months. Four massive cranes are positioned at each corner of the stadium to help facilitate the erection of those super structures.
The cistern system has also been put in place. This will be a 140,000-gallon storage tank that will store rainwater that will be recycled for things such as flushing toilets.
Already, the formation of the field wall and the main concourse are visible.
DeCoursey said that there are currently about 500 workers on site daily and that number will peak in 2026. When Geodis Park was under construction their peak number for workers on site daily was 600 but Nissan Stadium will grow to more than 1,000 construction workers daily in 2026, he said.
Metro Sports Authority and hte Titans are prioritizing diversity hiring through construction. Out of the 843 workers hired so far, 581 are minorities.
“We said from the start that this project is about participation and about including all the elements of our city and state,” said Adolpho Birch, Titans senior vice president and chief of external affairs. “We set a goal of 25% (minority and women-owned subcontractors) for participation. We are happy to report we expect to meet and exceed that.”
Titans officials project that 27% of the businesses hired to help with the construction of the stadium are owned by women or minorities.
