Missouri State football felt like it was the better team in both its games to start the season, only to lose both. The Bears left no doubt who the better team was when they finally came out on the winning end on Saturday night.
The Bears (1-2) were victorious in a 28-14 win over Lindenwood (0-3) at Plaster Stadium during the third week of the 2024 college football stadium.
Here’s how we graded Missouri State’s performance in its home opener on Saturday:
More: How could Pac-12 poaching Mountain West schools impact Missouri State, Conference USA?
Missouri State offense: A
Starting quarterback Jacob Clark was extremely efficient, and running back Jacardia Wright had one of the better games of his career. The Bears controlled the line of scrimmage and did exactly what you wanted to see them do against an inferior opponent.
Missouri State defense: B+
Outside one point when the Bears fell asleep after taking a 21-point lead, the defense was dominant when creating three second-half interceptions. The unit allowed a handful of big plays, including a 79-yard touchdown pass with one minute left.
Missouri State special teams: B-
There wasn’t much to complain about until the third quarter when Yousef Obeid’s 38-yard field goal was blocked. The Bears obviously still have some work to do.
Missouri State coaching: B+
Head coach Ryan Beard had his team locked in and ready to go, although you would’ve liked to see the Bears do a little more after jumping out to a 21-0 lead. The decision to leave Clark in and take a big hit from the defense on fourth down with under two minutes left when up 21 knocked the GPA down a few points.
Overall grade: B+
The Bears delivered the complete game that was expected from them against a newer Division I FCS opponent. It’s not time to overreact to Missouri State and what this season could be after this win, but it did show the potential players and coaches have talked about.
