Only eight ratified copies of the United States Constitution exist — and one of them is set to be auctioned off in Asheville this month.
Homeowners in Edenton, North Carolina, found the “incredibly rare” document inside an old filing cabinet in 2022 while preparing the house for sale. The 184-acre plantation where the document was found was bought in 1765 by then-Gov. Samuel Johnston.

How many copies of the Constitution are there?
Only a few out of the 100 copies of the Constitution were signed by then-Secretary of Congress Charles Thomson. Thomson was tasked with sending the copies to state legislatures in the 13 original colonies after the Confederation Congress met on Sept. 28, 1787.
That resolution, combined with Thomson’s signature, makes the document an official ratified edition of the Constitution, the auction house said.

Where will the copy be auctioned?
Brunk Auctions, a North Carolina-based auction house, is facilitating the sale of the document in Asheville. The sale is set to take place on Sept. 28 this year as the last and only other recorded sale of a similar document since 1891, according to the auction house.
The sale date is also the 237th anniversary of the day Congress passed the ratification resolution.

How much does a copy of the constitution sell for?
The starting price for the document is $1 million, but experts expect it will sell for much more. According to the document listing on Brunk Auctions’ website, the next bid must be $1.1 million or more.
