NORTHERN MICHIGAN — While the trees have started to change color, the summer heat seems to be returning to Northern Michigan this weekend.
While you may be planning to soak in the rays at the beach or catch up on your latest binge watch, here are a few fun ways to spend your weekend in the region:
The C.S. Lewis Festival
The 22nd annual C.S. Lewis festival is coming to Petoskey Sept. 13-15.
Sarah Arthur, Sophfronia Scott and Léna Roy are among the featured scholars set to speak at the event.
The weekend will be celebrating the works of authors C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L’Engle and Thomas Merton.
A complete schedule of events can be found at cslewisfestival.org.
A trip to the farmers market
Throughout the weekend, various communities will be holding their own farmers markets for people to visit and shop at.
Downtown Petoskey’s farmers market will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 on Howard Street between East Mitchell and Michigan streets.
Cheboygan’s farmers market will kick off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Festival Square. The 2024 Outdoor Market features fruit and vegetable sellers, and nearing autumn often brings pumpkins and fall ornaments in for some seasonal fun.

Soo Film Festival
The Soo Film Festival is open through the weekend, with events running until Sept. 15.
The film festival highlights films and filmmakers from the Great Lakes region. The screenings will be held throughout the weekend at the Soo Threatre and Bayliss Public Library. Single tickets for showings are $7 each.
The full schedule can be found at soofilmfestival.org.
Ray Scott concert
A country music concert will be coming to Victories Sports and Entertainment at Odawa Casino on Sept. 13.
Kicking off at 9 p.m., Ray Scott will be performing at the Petoskey casino.
Doors open at 8 p.m. and there is a $10 cover charge. A DJ will perform afterwards.
Visit a local trail
Whether you’re known to conquer the stairs at the Petoskey State Park or make a visit to a local conservancy walking path, the forecast shows cloudy skies and little — if any — rain, making it a great time to be outside.
The Little Traverse Conservancy has land in five Northern Michigan counties for people to visit. A trip to West Traverse Township would bring you to the Thorne Swift Nature Preserve, for example, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 minutes before sunset for visitors. Visiting the reserve is free.
A full list of trails can be found at landtrust.org/explore.
