Elizabeth Warren is seeking her third term in the U.S. Senate in November. The Democrat faces a challenge from political newcomer John Deaton, who defeated two other candidates in the Republican primary. Massachusetts voters will go to the polls to make their pick for the U.S. Senate; the electorate has a choice between Democrat incumbent Sen. Elizabeth Warren and political newcomer John Deaton running on the Republican ticket.
There will also be two unenrolled candidates and one candidate representing the Workers Party.
U.S. Sen Elizabeth Warren
Warren, 75, was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 and was reelected in 2018. She ran a brief campaign for president in 2020 before throwing her support to Joe Biden.
Warren is a former attorney, consumer advocate and author who has penned almost a dozen books, mostly about money management and the crisis of the middle class.
Deemed one of the most progressive voices on Capitol Hill, Warren has proposed raising taxes on the rich to generate the funds for universal child care and student debt relief, and to combat the nation’s housing shortage. She has been an avid supporter of the Green New Deal.
On immigration, Warren has defended her decision to vote against a bipartisan bill in Washington that was designed to address the border crisis. While Massachusetts expects to spend $2 billion over the course of three years to house and support an influx of migrants, Warren said the bill was “completely inadequate” and noted that Republican opposition in the Senate had already effectively killed the bill’s prospects.
Warren lives in Cambridge with her husband, Bruce Mann, and their golden retriever. She has two children and three grandchildren.

John Deaton
Deaton, 57, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and practicing attorney, is a newcomer to politics, launching his bid for the U.S. Senate after moving to Massachusetts from Rhode Island in January. A native of Michigan, he currently lives in Bolton.
Deaton has said he would have supported the bipartisan immigration bill, saying it would have been a good first step toward changing American immigration policy.
A cryptocurrency supporter, Deaton is focused on changing regulations that limit investments in certain enterprises to “accredited investors,” those with more than $1 million in assets or those making more than $300,000 a year over the course of a few years.
Deaton believes in mandatory financial literacy classes for young adults, free universal school meals and the need to address poverty in the nation. But he says his approach would be different from Warren’s: “She is fighting against the rich, it’s not the same as fighting for the poor.”
Deaton has three young daughters. He penned a memoir, “Food Stamp Warrior,” about his own struggles with poverty early in life.

Others in the race
There are two unenrolled or unaffiliated politicians on the November ballot in the race for the U.S. Senate: Shiva Ayyadurai, an anti-vaccine activist who is also running for president; and Joseph Schena.
James Griffin will be representing the state’s Workers Party. A Stoughton native, he graduated from Abington High School and earned his associate’s degree from Massasoit Community College. He has been affiliated with the Workers Party of Massachusetts, the Democratic Socialists of America, Boston Labor for Palestine and the Randolph Tenants Association.
