Given how some of the recent matchups with Kentucky have gone for Georgia, special teams could be crucial in the outcome of this game should it become a slugfest. Georgia has a big edge over Kentucky on special teams.
Georgia kicker Peyton Woodring had a solid year in 2023, improving down the stretch and he has continued to show improvement in 2024. Woodring nailed a career long 55 yarder against Clemson and has made all four of his attempts this season.
The last three matchups between these two teams has seen the starting kicker for the Dawgs have to make three field goals, including Woodring a season ago. Should that become a factor again, Georgia fans can have confidence in their kicker.
The other side is the field position battle, where Georgia has had the great privilege of fielding one of the nation’s best punters in Brett Thorson. Thorson landed 14 of his 32 punts a season ago inside the 20 yard line and averaged 43.8 yards per punt, and his four punts this season have included three inside the 20 and one touchback. Should field position be prominent, Thorson gives the Dawgs an immediate edge when called upon.
Georgia could run away with this game, but should it become more of a tight battle, the Dawgs have a key advantage on the third phase of the game between Woodring and Thorson.
