Private bus companies that want to stop running bus routes and service will have to give riders, public officials and NJ Transit more notice under a new law signed by Gov. Phil Murphy Thursday.
The new law, sponsored by two Hudson and Essex County lawmakers, is a direct response to a wave of private bus operators that have abruptly stopped running commuter bus service in the past two years, citing financial losses.
In the most recent case last month where NJ Transit assumed 20 routes that Coach USA ran under contract, the state agency had less than two month to put together a plan to prevent riders from being stranded with no transit service.
