Barring any other twists, voters in Kentucky’s House District 40 now know who will represent Democrats on the ballot this November.
The Louisville Democratic Party’s executive committee chose Nima Kulkarni, the incumbent state representative since 2019, in a vote Friday evening, according to party chair Logan Gatti. The committee chose to nominate her over four other candidates.
It’s unclear whether Republicans will field a candidate in the district, which leans blue, in the Nov. 5 general election.
No one in the party applied to run in the May primary, and the Louisville Republican Party has not said whether it plans to put forward a nominee this fall. Ballots are set to begin printing on Sept. 16, according to the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office.
The spot on the ballot had been certified as vacant by Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams following questions about the incumbent representative’s eligibility raised in a lawsuit during the spring.
Kulkarni, a local attorney, received nearly 80% of all votes in May’s primary election, but her eligibility in that race was struck down by the Court of Appeals and confirmed by the state Supreme Court because of an error in her nomination paperwork.
When Adams declared a vacancy last week, Kulkarni expressed interest in the seat and was endorsed Thursday by U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey, who called her a “proven and effective legislator” in a social media post.
The lawsuit that led to the vacancy had been due back in court Tuesday morning for a hearing on a motion to stop the nomination process. That motion was withdrawn over the weekend, though, clearing the way for the nomination to move forward.
