Wisconsin’s start to the season has been puzzling. Phil Longo’s offense has shown flashes at times, and moved the ball well at others. But explosive plays and points have not really followed.
This great note from Bud Elliott of the Cover 3 Podcast explains one factor: “If you go back to when [Tyler] Van Dyke was good at Miami, he was playing with a lot of tempo, that was with Rhett Lashlee as the offensive coordinator. And Wisconsin under Phil Longo, their OC, has been a really fast team. In fact last year I had them in top-20 in my tempo metrics. But this year, they’re bottom half in the country.”
Elliott goes on to say he thinks the new helmet communication system is slowing Wisconsin’s offense down. That may be the case, but I’d venture to say the unit is operating more conservatively. At the least, it is being more deliberate in running plays. The program is attempting to run an air raid system with the approach of an old, ground-and-pound rushing attack.
Whether that’s a directive from Longo or Fickell, it has to change. Wisconsin needs to lean all the way into the air raid approach if it has any chance of succeeding. That means running tempo for an entire four quarters.
