From newcomers seen in recent animated movies like “Wish” and “Raya and the Last Dragon” to familiar film favorites like Elsa and Anna, Buzz and Woody and Lightning McQueen and Mater, more than 50 Disney characters are gliding, spinning and flipping into the 2024 Oklahoma State Fair.
One of the state’s largest annual events, the Oklahoma State Fair is Sept. 12-22 at the OKC Fairgrounds, 3001 General Pershing Blvd.
A longstanding tradition, the state fair annually opens with a new icy extravaganza from the Mouse House, and this year, “Disney on Ice presents Magic in the Stars” is skating into Jim Norick Arena for performances Sept. 12-16.
“With so many characters taking the ice, there are highlights for all Disney fans,” Performance Director Joe Jacobsen told The Oklahoman in an email. “As the director who watches each production, it’s a thrilling part of my job seeing people of all ages, genders and backgrounds getting pulled into the excitement of the production as their favorite characters take the ice.”
Here’s what state fairgoers can expect from “Disney on Ice presents Magic in the Stars:”
What new characters and movies are included in ‘Disney on Ice presents Magic in the Stars?’
“Magic in the Stars” marks the “Disney on Ice” debuts of Asha and Star, from last year’s animated musical “Wish,” and Raya, the titular heroine from the Oscar-nominated 2021 animated adventure “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
Also for the first time on ice, royal sisters Elsa and Anna venture “Into the Unknown,” from their hit sequel “Frozen 2,” and the Disney/Pixar characters Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater hit the road to “Life Is a Highway,” from their original 2006 adventure “Cars.”
Ahead of the fifth film in the franchise, “Toy Story” fans will get the chance to reconnect with Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, Rex and Hamm in a new “Disney on Ice” scene, too.
What other Disney characters are featured in the ice show ‘Magic in the Stars?’
Featuring “Disney on Ice” mainstays Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Goofy, “Magic in the Stars” starts when the North Star shines brightly and descends upon “Pinocchio” sidekick Jiminy Cricket as he welcomes the audience, reminding them that the most magical things can happen — and it all starts with a wish.
From there, Mirabel Madrigal discovers the joy of being with family and embracing the magic each person has inside during the on-ice performance of “Encanto,” titular heroine Moana sets out on a high-seas voyage of determination and self-discovery to restore the heart of Te Fiti and “The Princess and the Frog” protagonist Tiana works to realize her goal of opening a restaurant.
“Of course, they’ll have the princesses for the girls, with Cinderella, Snow White, Belle and Rapunzel. So, it’s a little something for everybody — and that seems to be the theme of the fair, something for everybody, from 8 to 80. In this instance, it’s a little something for the boys and a little something for the girls,” fair spokesman J. Scott Munz told The Oklahoman.
What memorable movie songs should fans listen for in ‘Disney on Ice presents Magic in the Stars?’
“Disney on Ice presents Magic in the Stars” features memorable movie songs spanning decades of the Mouse House’s animated film catalog.
The musical selections range “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” from “Cinderella,” “Some Day My Prince Will Come” from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” to “At Last I See the Light” from “Tangled,” “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from “Encanto” and “Some Things Never Change” from “Frozen 2.”
“Being a lifelong fan of Disney, I love that I get to direct a show that mixes both the classics and the more modern songs together,” Jacobsen said. “It allows us to utilize a wide range of influences in our dance blocks and choreography.”
How does ‘Magic in the Stars’ translate favorite Disney movie moments to the ice?
“Magic in the Stars” translates favorite Disney movie moments to the ice using demanding figure skating, high-flying acrobatics, daring stunts, innovative lighting, thrilling special effects, captivating costumes and striking set designs.
“I personally get a real kick out of how we bring the Cave of Wonders to life, with the Genie showing off his magical powers through exciting choreography, comedy and amazing acrobatics,” said Jacobsen, who was a competitive figure skater and a “Disney on Ice” performer before becoming performance director.
“I’m also a big ‘Moana’ fan, and the combination of beautiful music, great set pieces and powerful skating often gives me goosebumps. Even after watching it 300-plus times.”
How is the long-running ‘Disney on Ice’ tradition at the state fair changing after 2024?
“Disney on Ice” has been a mainstay at the Oklahoma State Fair for three decades, dating from 1987 when “Walt Disney’s Snow White On Ice, featuring Mickey Mouse” glided into the annual Sooner State event.
But the tradition is set to change after the 2024 state fair: Construction is moving along on the OG&E Coliseum, the official name for the new OKC Fairgrounds arena being built under the MAPS 4 program. The 216,164-square-foot venue is expected to open in mid-2025.
It will be replace the almost 60-year-old Jim Norick Arena, which has hosted more than 250 event days a year, including international horse shows, music concerts, high school sports championships and “Disney on Ice” shows at the Oklahoma State Fair.
“I have full confidence that the new building is going to open in … plenty of time for ‘Disney on Ice’ to be in the new building, OG&E Coliseum, next September,” Munz said. “We’re excited about it. It’s long overdue.”
