Joe Biden said he was “doing 9/11” in his latest gaffe just one day before the 23rd anniversary of the terror attacks.
The US president, who announced in July he would not run in the presidential election after a slew of age-related gaffes, made the comment to reporters ahead of the debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
“I’m going up to my granddaughter’s birthday in New York,” Mr Biden said on the White House lawn before heading to his Marine One helicopter.
“Then we’re gonna watch the debate, then tomorrow I’m doing 9/11,” the president added.
Mr Biden was likely referring to his scheduled attendance in solemn remembrance ceremonies that will take place to commemorate the victims of the terror attacks on Sept 11 2001.
He is scheduled to head to Ground Zero in New York, the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, before heading back to Washington to show respect for the victims of the attack on the Pentagon.
The comment sparked confusion and criticism online, especially from Republicans.
“Yikes,” the Republican National Committee Research account posted on X.
An account associated with Trump’s campaign posted:
Another user added “Biden’s slip-ups are endless. You’d think someone would double-check his scripts by now.”
But Biden was seemingly unaware of what he had just said and continued to speak to reporters about the debate between Ms Harris and Trump.
“I spoke with the vice president. She’s calm, cool, and collected,” the president said.
“I think she’s going to do great, and I’m not going to tell you what advice I gave her.”
