NCIS beefs up unit in push to solve more cold cases in Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Navy Criminal Investigative Service now has 10 people in the Hawaii cold case squad, a mix of special agents and investigators.

There are dozens of cases that the group is currently working to solve in the islands.

Among them: the missing persons case of Victorio Santiago, an active duty United States Navy member who disappeared with his two sons in 2002.

Another case the unit is trying to get fresh leads in is from 1980. Two marines were murdered in east Honolulu.

NCIS is hoping the public can help finally identify their killers and finally “bring some resolve to the family,” said Phil Camero, an investigator for NCIS.

Camero is a retired Honolulu police officer who followed the case since his rookie days.

NICS started the cold case unit in 1995, but advances with DNA and other crime solving tools are allowing agents to make new strides.

“See if we can apply the latest technology,” said Elizabeth Pierri, deputy director of operational support at NCIS.

Special Agent James Curry said it can be frustrating when leads don’t pan out, or the suspect has already passed.

“At least the family will get some justice, some relief, they’ll know what happened,” Curry said.

Not all of NCIS cases involve service members. If a crime happens to a civilian on a military base, that could also qualify.

“Whether that’s off base, on base, or on a ship, we are going to get involved,” Pierri said. If a service member is a victim, even out of the country, NCIS will work to solve the case.

“Families have sent their daughters and sons to serve in the U.S. military and far away places … we care about every single one of those cases.”

NCIS has a list of wanted and missing persons on the website. There is also a place to submit TIPS.
