FSU football head coach Mike Norvell talks Memphis game, bye week
The 2024 college football season couldn’t have started worse for Florida State, and now the only Group of Five conference team ranked in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll are coming to Doak Campbell Stadium.
The Seminoles are a surprising 0-2 as they prepare to face coach Mike Norvell’s former team, Memphis. FSU had an open week to recover after two stunning losses to Georgia Tech and Boston College dropped it from a top-10 preseason team to unranked and outside the College Football Playoff picture, on the heels of last year’s CFP snub.
Memphis (2-0) cruised in its first two games this season and fifth-year coach Ryan Silverfield, an assistant under Norvell with the Tigers, has the program positioned as the favorite in the American Athletic Conference and a top contender for the Group of Five spot in the 12-team playoff.

College football 2024: Memphis vs. Florida State predictionsSports Illustrated: Take the over
“Memphis has a potent offense with (quarterback Seth) Henigan in control, and I’m not sold on this FSU defense playing at an above-average level. I’ll grab the over with questions for both defense and also the opportunity to buy low on the Noles offense.”
College Football Network: Florida State 31, Memphis 17
“If this line had been available on books back in July, Florida State would have been around -24. … In his last two seasons at Florida State, Norvell is 23-4 with the ‘Noles. That’s not an accident. The pendulum swings the other way, and Norvell can at least salvage this season to some extent and will prevent it from becoming a complete disaster. That starts this weekend against Memphis, and it begins by getting the offense going.”
PickDawgz: Memphis (-7)
“Florida State has shown nothing offensively with (D.J.) Uiagalelei at quarterback, and the Noles defense can’t stop the run. Florida State is also 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games as a favorite. Mario Anderson is off to a great start for Memphis, and he should be licking his chops seeing this Florida State defense. Give me Memphis and the free touchdown.”
