From an emo dance party to unexpected tales of friendship and empowering art, the weekend is packed with plenty to do in Iowa City. Here are six events to check out.
Emo Nite at Gabe’s
Emo Nite has become the biggest party and gathering point for fans of emo, pop-punk, and related styles. The annual event pays homage to a popular subculture, uniting fans old and new. Emo Nite is a dance party featuring DJs spinning all the best emo, pop-punk, and alternative rock music from the 90s and 2000s and new wave favorites. From 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Sept. 14, Gabe’s transforms into an authentic space to celebrate diversity and experience passionate catharsis. Tickets start at $20.

Scalia/Ginsburg
Catch the final “Scalia/Ginsburg” shows at Riverside Theatre. Written by Derrick Wang and directed by Adam Knight, “Scalia/Ginsburg” is an operatic comedy that portrays the unlikely friendship of two U.S. Supreme Court Justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia. Despite their opposing views in the courtroom, the opera highlights their shared love of opera as a bond that transcends political differences. The final showtimes are a 7:30 p.m. performance on Saturday, Sept. 14, and a 2:30 p.m. matinee performance on Sunday, Sept. 15, with tickets costing $15 to $39.

The Alleyway Fashion Show takes to the streets
The Alleyway Fashion Show, set for Saturday, Sept. 14, is the showcase event of the Wright House of Fashion, a non-profit organization that pairs youth with fashion. The show transforms the streets of Iowa City into a catwalk, featuring a handful of up-and-coming student designers. The modern designs are accompanied by emerging models and DJs. The Alleyway Fashion Show will light the streets ablaze in style from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 110 S Linn St. next to Buzz Salon.

Welcoming Week begins Friday
Johnson County’s Welcoming Week celebration returns Friday with community-building events throughout the Iowa City corridor. Some of the weekend highlights include Rock the Block, Welcome Festival Intercultural Celebration, The Monk, and The Gun Film Screening.Friday’s Rock the Block event will celebrate Johnson County’s diversity through food, live entertainment, and community engagement. Sunday’s Welcome Festival Intercultural Celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. at Mercer Park features a free community meal and cultural food samples, displays from community vendors, and interactive activities.Head over to FilmScene’s Chauncey Location at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday to catch a pay-what-you-can screening of “The Monk and The Gun. ” The critically acclaimed 2023 film explores the clash between tradition and modernity.
Farm Cycle tours Johnson County farms
The Bike Library’s Farm Cycle combines farm tours and local cuisine on Sunday, Sept. 15. Cyclists will visit four farms, with chefs preparing seasonal dishes using farm-fresh ingredients at each stop. A few of the tour stops include Calyx Lavender Farm and Black Diamond Meats. The ride ends at The Bike Library, where SloMoBop will provide live entertainment while Wild Culture Kombucha serves specialty drinks. Riders are encouraged to bring their own mess kit, water, and cycling gear. Tickets for the Farm Cycle are available online and range in price from $55 to $65.
Prompt for the Planet: Community Promises
Hosted by The LENA Project, Engie, and the University of Iowa Office of Sustainability and the Environment, Prompt for the Planet: Community Promises is Iowa City’s response to Amanda Gorman’s call to action. The first Youth Poet Laureate of the United States of America’s poem “Earthrise” was her prompt for the planet. It encouraged a collective responsibility to protect the earth through unity and hope. The free event will take place at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Englert Theatre. Prompt for the Planet will highlight the power of local art − including music, dance, poetry and visual arts − and how it can drive change.
