The Arizona State Sun Devils entered Saturday’s game against Mississippi State 0-5 all-time against the SEC.
They are now 1-5.
Led by an impressive rushing performance from running back Cam Skattebo, Arizona State held off Mississippi State at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, 30-23 to move to 2-0 on the season.
Skattebo rushed 33 times for 262 yards, second all-time in ASU history and sealed the game with a 39-yard rush late to allow ASU football to kneel out the clock.
ASU had led 30-3 in the third quarter before Mississippi State rallied to make it 30-23 with 5:27 left in the game.
The Bulldogs never got the ball back after Skattebo picked up some big first downs on the final possession of the game.
ASU QB Sam Leavitt went 10-for-20 passing for 69 yards in the game, but also rushed for 68 yards on 11 carries, with two touchdowns.
As a team, ASU rushed for 346 yards on 57 carries.
Mississippi State rushed for 24 yards on 27 carries.
Blake Shapen went 18-for-28 passing for Mississippi State, with two touchdowns, including an 80-yard completion to Kevin Coleman Jr. that pulled MSU within seven late.
ASU will face Texas State on the road on Thursday night in its next game. Mississippi State (1-1) will host Toledo on Saturday.

Cam Skattebo just ran for 39 yards down to the MSU 12 to seal the victory for ASU.
The Sun Devils were able to run out the game clock with kneel downs after Skattebo’s run.
Skattebo finished with 262 yards on 33 carries.
It wasn’t pretty after leading 30-3 in the third quarter, but it was a win and Arizona State is 2-0 on the season after going 3-9 last season.

Cam Skattebo picked up a huge first down on 4th & 1 at the ASU 34 to extend ASU’s next drive and help take more time off the clock.
He later picked up another first down with a 10-yard run on 3rd & 5 at ASU’s 39.
Skattebo has rushed for 21 huge yards on this drive. He has 32 carries for 223 yards in this game, averaging seven yards per carry. His long is 16 yards.
We’re at the 2-minute timeout and ASU has a 1st and 10 at the ASU 49.
We know that Mississippi State can score quickly.
It just did.
Mississippi State had a 1-play, 80-yard drive with Kevin Coleman Jr. running for a touchdown after catching a pass from Blake Shapen.
There is 5:27 left in the game and ASU’s lead, which was once 30-3 in the third quarter, is now 30-23.

For the third straight possession, ASU is punting against Mississippi State.
The Sun Devils’ most recent drive sputtered after gaining 22 yards.
Arizona State did run 4:02 off the clock on the drive.
There is now 5:40 left in the game and ASU holds a 30-16 lead.
It’s hot at Mountain America Stadium. And ASU just brought the heat on Mississippi State.
With MSU driving and with all the momentum in this game after scoring touchdowns on its previous two possessions, ASU sacked Bulldogs QB Blake Shapen on two straight plays before forcing Shapen to throw a quick incomplete pass on third down to force Mississippi State to punt.
ASU needed that.
The Sun Devils could use a good possession on offense here, even if they don’t score, just to give their defense a rest, because it feels like the ASU defense still might need to make some big plays in the final 9:42 of this game.
ASU has now been forced to punt twice against Mississippi State and on two straight possessions.
The Sun Devils just went 3-and-out for the second straight possession, giving the Bulldogs the ball back and a chance to get even closer to ASU. There is still a lot of time left in this game and Mississippi State has a quick-striking offense.
ASU had gained just three yards and then zero yards on rushing plays to start its most recent two possessions, and then hasn’t been able to pick up the first downs.
There is 12:10 left in the fourth quarter at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.
This game is not over.
Mississippi State just scored a touchdown on its second straight possession to pull within 30-16 with 13:09 left in the game after missing the extra point.
Blake Shapen found Davon Booth from 15 yards out for the TD.
MSU benefitted from a holding call on ASU on 4th & 9 on the play before the touchdown to extend the Bulldogs’ drive.
Shapen is now 15-for-24 for 166 yards in the game.
This is obviously going to be a big next possession for ASU as it tries to get some of the momentum back in this game, because the Bulldogs currently have all the momentum.

There’s a first time for everything.
Including ASU punting against Mississippi State.
After MSU just put together its best drive of the game on offense, ASU’s had its worst drive on offense, going 3-and-out against the Bulldogs.
ASU didn’t help its cause by getting a penalty for interfering with the catch on the punt, giving Mississippi State great field position.
Keyvone Lee just ran it into the end zone from six yards out on a 4th & 3 to get its first touchdown of the game.
Mississippi State’s drive was its best of the night. The Bulldogs went 75 yards over 12 plays and 4:04.
Lee leads the Bulldogs with 31 yards on eight carries.
Score: ASU 30, Mississippi State 10 (2:29 left in third quarter)
Ian Hershey kicked a 47-yard field goal in the first half. He’s now added a 46-yard field goal to start the second half to give ASU a 30-3 lead over Mississippi State.
ASU’s first drive of the second half was an impressive one, taking 8:27 off the clock and going for 46 yards over 14 plays.
Earlier we raved about Cam Skattebo (who is now at 21 carries for 166 yards in this game), but ASU QB Sam Leavitt deserves some credit, too.
He how has nine carries for 64 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He hasn’t been as effective passing (he’s 7-for-14 for 62 yards), but the Sun Devils haven’t needed his arm with the ground game putting up such impressive numbers.
ASU has to be thrilled with how Leavitt is playing early in the season (and with how the whole team is playing, for that matter).
Score: ASU 30, Mississippi State 3 (6:33 left in third quarter)
The ASU Sun Devils have never beat an SEC opponent.
They are 30 minutes from changing that.
Buoyed by an impressive running game and a stalwart defense, ASU has built a 27-3 lead on Mississippi State at the half.
ASU has rushed for 208 yards on 28 carries in this game. MSU has -13 yards rushing on 14 attempts.
That’s a stark contrast involving the team from Starkville.
Arizona State has 262 total yards, comparted to Mississippi State’s 82.
The Sun Devils hold a 19:11 to 10:49 advantage in time of possession and have scored a touchdown on defense for the second straight game to start the season (they had two TDs on defense in the season opener).
Arizona State really couldn’t have asked for a better six quarters to start the season.

ASU QB Sam Leavitt just ran it in from 1-yard out to give ASU a 27-3 lead late in the first half against Mississippi State, his second rushing TD of the game.
But, let’s take a moment to recognize ASU’s Cam Skattebo.
The running back has a career high 137 yards on 15 carries in the first half, his fourth 100-yard rushing game. And we still have another half to play at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.
On this most recent ASU drive, Skattebo had runs of 16, 16, 10 and 13 yards.
Skattebo is also making his presence felt as a receiver. He has two receptions for 29 yards.
As a team, ASU has 28 carries for 208 yards. Numbers like those are going to help you win football games. Players like Cam Skattebo will help, too.
There’s still a lot of football left to play, but ASU has put itself in position to win this game with its rushing attack in the first half.
Score: Arizona State 27, Mississippi State 3 (:34 left in second quarter)
The ASU defense stopped Mississippi State on a 4th & 1 at the ASU 31, with the Bulldogs turning it over on downs after an 8-play, 43-yard drive.
The Sun Devils have held Mississippi State to 90 total yards in this game. Mississippi State had 450 total yards last week in its 56-7 win over Eastern Kentucky.
The ASU defense continues to shine early this season, and set the tone for the Sun Devils, and they just got a huge play, scoring a touchdown on a fumble from Mississippi State QB Blake Shapen.
Shapen fumbled as he was being tackled by Clayton Smith and C.J. Fite recovered the fumble and was able to stretch his arms over the end zone as he fell out of bounds, scoring the TD for the Sun Devils.
ASU’s defense has now scored three times in its two games this season. It had an interception return for a touchdown and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the 48-7 win over Wyoming last week.
Talk about setting the tone for your team.
Score: ASU 20, Mississippi State 3 (8:23 left in second quarter)
ASU’s third drive of the game stalled, but Ian Hershey salvaged some points for the Sun Devils, connecting on a 47-yard field goal.
It is his career long.
Sam Leavitt wasn’t able to connect on a long pass to Jake Smith on the previous play. He is 5-for-11 in the game for 54 yards, but hasn’t had to do much with his arm.
Leavitt has rushed for 54 yards on five carries and Arizona State has rushed for 140 yards as a team on 18 carries, led by Cam Skattebo’s nine carries for 80 yards.
Score: ASU Sun Devils 13, Mississippi State Bulldogs 3 (9:33 left in second quarter)
The Bulldogs would have preferred a touchdown, but Mississippi State just got on the board with a 32-yard field goal from Kyle Ferrie to cap off a 12-play, 71-yard drive.
After two 3-and-outs, Mississippi State’s offense desperately needed to get something going, and it did, although its drive stalled deep in ASU territory.
Blake Shapen is now 5-for-9 for 68 yards in the game for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State still hasn’t been able to get much going on the ground, with just five total yards rushing.
But it did get on the scoreboard.

The Sun Devils have extended their lead to 10-0 on Mississippi State.
Ian Hershey hit a 27-yard field goal to end a 12-play, 60-yard drive for ASU football.
After the first two possessions of the game for both teams, ASU has 10 first downs compared to zero for Mississippi State.
The Sun Devils have 149 yards. The Bulldogs have two.
Arizona State has 107 yards rushing, while Mississippi State has -4.
Mississippi State’s time of possession? 2:32. ASU? 10:28.

The Sun Devils’ defense shined against Wyoming in Week 1, only allowing a late touchdown in a 48-7 win.
It hasn’t slowed down early in the Week 2 game against Mississippi State Saturday night.
Arizona State just forced Mississippi State to its second 3-and-out to start the game at Mountain America Stadium.
The Bulldogs have gained just two yards on their first two possessions.
Not a bad way to start for ASU.
The ASU football team got off to a great start in its win over Wyoming last week.
It did the same on Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.
The Sun Devils forced a 3-and-out from Mississippi State on the Bulldogs’ opening drive, then marched 79 yards down the field in 10 plays and 4:11 to take a 7-0 lead on a 17-yard run from QB Sam Leavitt.
That’ll do.
Leavitt had two carries for 32 yards on the drive, include the TD run. Cam Skattebo had 3 carries for 24 yards.

The Arizona State football vs Mississippi State game is currently scheduled to begin at 7:40 p.m.
ESPN is showing the Alabama vs South Florida game, which still has seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. The ASU game will start on ESPNEWS and then switch to ESPN at the conclusion of South Florida-Alabama.
