The Duke’s Mayo Classic has been an event held at the beginning of every season (outside of 2020), bring the likes of Clemson, Georgia and South Carolina to Charlotte. Both the Volunteers and Wolfpack have played in this game before. Tennessee was beaten up by West Virginia in 2018, while North Carolina State fell to South Carolina in 2017.
Tennessee might not be a favorite to take the SEC title, they certainly have aspirations of staying in the mix to sneak into the expanded College Football Playoff. There were plenty of examples of potential brilliance in their 69-3 dominance against Chattanooga last week. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw three touchdown passes in the win, while running back Dylan Sampson rushed for three scores as well.
A similar story can be told about NC State. While they may be a longshot to get to the CFP, the Wolfpack has a solid enough team to cause some havoc in the top-heavy ACC. They did have some trouble against Western Carolina in their season opener last week, only coming away with a 38-21 win.
This is the first meeting between the two programs since 2012, with Tennessee win two of the three all-time matchups.
MY PICK: Tennessee wins, 40-24
