After stopping by UConn earlier this week, Portland Trail Blazers rookie Donovan Clingan continued a busy offseason by pulling up to watch the U.S. Open in New York City.
Clingan returned to UConn Thursday and posted on Instagram from the Huskies’ practice facility. He then made the quick trek down to Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch two American men compete in the Grand Slam semifinal for the first time in 19 years.
The seventh pick was treated to an entertaining matchup between Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe that saw the former win 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Fritz will advance to face No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner in the final on Sunday.
Clingan was an Associated Press All-American honorable mention last season after averaging 13 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 assists on 63.9% shooting from the field in 35 games. He ranked second in the country in PER (34.8) and fifth in blocked shots.
The 7-footer debuted was named to the 2024 NBA All-Summer League second team after averaging nine points, 12.3 rebounds, 4.3 blocks and two assists on 35.7% shooting from the field in four games. His 4.3 blocks led all players and were the most in history at the event.
Clingan enters his rookie campaign with high expectations after dazzling in the desert. He is considered a cornerstone of the franchise and projects to have a bright future ahead.
