New Mexico State (1-0) opens Conference USA play at home against Liberty (1-0) at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday.
The Aggies defeated Southeast Missouri (1-1) 23-16 last Saturday to open up their season. NM State trailed 16-10 entering the fourth quarter, but scored 13 unanswered to win the game capped off by a three-yard rushing touchdown from junior running back Seth McGowan. The Aggies’ win was sealed after an interception from redshirt freshman safety Tayden Barnes on the ensuing SEMO drive, who would later receive CUSA Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday.
Liberty defeated Campbell (0-1) 41-24 to start its season and are 22-point favorites on the road, according to ESPN Bet. The Flames defeated NM State twice last season, including in the 2023 CUSA Championship Game. The Aggies last beat Liberty in 2022 when they won 49-14 on the road as 24-point underdogs. This will be the Flames’ first visit to Las Cruces since 2019.

Liberty were the media’s preseason favorite to repeat as CUSA champions in a July poll, receiving 18 out of 20 first-place votes.
The Flames received nine votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll this week, tied for 10th-most amongst unranked teams.
NM State hasn’t started a season 2-0 since 2014, when it defeated Cal Poly and Georgia State to open the year.
The Aggies are 2-5 all-time against Liberty.
